LIVE THE DREAM
The 1990’s

The decade of raffles to raise money and push for a new clubhouse is on……

The number of students involved in lifesaving continued to grow and in the 1996-97 season over 100 students attended Saturday training/patrols. The variety of awards obtained by members also continued to increase. On the building front, the Council finally approved the clubs DA. A sense of “déjà vu” (1974) was apparent when huge seas, in my 1997, broached the boatshed shutter doors, but the damage was quickly repaired.

The 1997-98 season saw the last year of the Pittwater raffle. A new IRB was donated to the club, and 55 new awards were obtained for the season.

The first women’s boat crew to represent the club, competed at the Branch Championships in 1995. Club members, including Barker students, competed in the AMP Challenge in the 1994-95 season.

The club’s DA and BA applications did not proceed due to a forced change of site, but the following year (95-96) publicity in the local paper, brought a more positive result from Council, when they agreed to the concept of a building behind the existing structure.

During the 1998-99 season over $8500 was raised, and a further new IRB was received from BP. Rod McGibbon was appointed to the Board of Examiners, and at long last our BA was approved by Council in July 1999.

The 1999-2000 season started with a Special General Meeting to approve the commencement of construction on the extensions to the clubhouse. Drilling for piers commenced in September with concrete slabs following, and the conditions in the club were almost impossible for a while. The club made a return to surfboat competition with an Open and two Masters crews, following an influx of rowers.
