LIVE THE DREAM
THE 1970’S

The decade of the new building; a storm; and many members doing well in various competitions.

The boat crew put the club on the map competitively in 1970 when in their first season won 4 carnivals in a row – including Branch Champs and 2nd in the State. Volley medicine ball was introduced on the beach with a hernia-inducing 16lb ball. Intra-club competition moved up a notch thanks to Ed Ifould vs Stuart McNeill contests.

A new building was approved by Warringah Council and the old clubhouse was demolished in 1970. Between then and 1972 when the new building was officially opened, the “clubhouse” consisted of a 2sqm shed and attached tent. Gordon Harmon moved north in 1972 and in recognition of his overall contribution to the club, he along with Jack Doyle was awarded life membership.

E Ifould (stroke), D Sams (2nd stroke), S McNeill (2nd bow),
J Chapman (bow).
In the 1973-74 season the club again received front page coverage for a mass rescue at the beach , when one of those saved gave the club 4500. Social events continued to be well supported with over 100 at the New Years Eve party.

Disaster struck on the night 28 May 1974 when the surf generated by 160kmh winds inundated the club and swept away the SE corner of the building. Rebuilding was not completed until 1977. In 1977 Ed Ifould came second in the branch ski champs and finished in the first 6 in the Australian ski final. The clubs first march past team featured at the Branch titles.
“Sippers” 1971, under the tent annexe to the shed. The tent was ostensibly hired but due to wear and tear had to be finally purchased.
1977-78 saw the club receive its first IRB. Ed Ifould won the Branch ski title and teamed with Bob Pentecost on the double ski. The Open boat crew reached the semi- finals of the State and National titles. Carmen Campton, one of the first female members was selected in the 400m hurdles for the Commonwealth Games.

From 1970-72 the clubs open boat crew recorded a further second in the State titles, two seconds in the Australian titles together with numerous other carnival wins and placings. The crew was also in the winning Manly Warringah Branch team of 1972.

The 1972-73 season saw 31 rescues. The boat crew were, again part of the winning Branch team and won the Metropolitan Champs. Ed Ifould continued to feature in Ironman, ski and board at open carnivals.

Three boat crews went to the Australian titles in WA in 1979 and after 10 years as president, Michael Doig was awarded life membership.
The damage from the storm of the night of 28 May 1974 is evident in these photos. Winds reaching 200kmh and huge surf washing past the building destroyed the South East corner of the club.
