LIVE THE DREAM

The 1950’s

Official formation date – 27 March 1953
The club became an affiliate of the Surf Life Saving Association on 7 April 1953.

Gentlemen
It is with pleasure that I present on behalf of the Committee, this report covering the activities of this club during it’s first seven month season. As may be seen by the following report, progress has been made in all phases of our activities and all may be justly proud of our achievements.

Patrols
Due to recent inauguration no patrols have as yet taken place, but a squad is in training and should be qualified in time for the coming season. Thanks are extended to the Club Captain for his very active participation in this regard.

Membership
From a nucleus of 5 or 6 original foundation members formed in late February 1953, the Committee has built and maintained a regular, enthusiastic membership of 16 members. This shows a steady but assured progress for a newly formed Club.

Meetings
The Committee has met regularly throughout the season to conduct the affairs and business of the Club, there being 5 ordinary meetings. Attendance as per register has been most satisfactory.

Constitution
Newport Beach Constitution was adopted with amendments and clarification to meet the particular needs of the Club. Considerable time was spent by the Committee and especially Mr S R Fagle and it is hoped that this edition will serve for many years without major alteration.

Gear
Gear to the extent of a reel, line and belt, stretchers and first aid supplies have been secured and should be on hand shortly. Thanks are extended to the Sydney Branch for their efforts in assisting to secure same. Further the loan of a reel, line and belt has been extended to the Club for the coming season by our neighbouring club, North Narrabeen.

Premises
Progress towards the erection of temporary premises is well under way and we hope to be settled therein before the commencement of the season.

General
To all acting officers and members who are not specifically mentioned in this report, the appreciation of the committee is extended on a job well done.

The counterpart of inauguration is patience and perseverance and it is felt that Bungan Surf Club has fully stood the test and will go forward. To all present may we bear in mind that “Diligence and Service” is each one’s duty throughout the coming season.

First bronze medallions were awarded on 27 March 1954 to R.Ames, A.Gourlay, R.Wallace, W.Anschutz, E.Terrel and R.Degotardi (Qualifying).
Instructors were M.McCredie and M.Chapman. Also in 1954, the temporary “club” structures in the centre of the beach were replaced by a Nissen hut at the northern end of the beach.

In 1955-56 there was a mass rescue of 7 people. A&P Hyde and N.Jones gained their Bronze. A damaged surfboat from Avalon was repaired to become the clubs first boat and the club won the Manly Warringah Branch Gear Inspection.

During the 1956-57 and 1957-58 seasons the club held restricted surf carnivals. Water and electricity were connected to the club. Hugely successful Presentation Balls were held with 180 attending in 1957 and 400 in 1958.

The canteen was erected 1958-59 and the third restricted carnival was held. In
1959-60 the boatshed was added to the Nissen Hut and the club’s third boat “Kon Tiki” was donated by Bilgola.

The third clubhouse (1956) – had been transported down the hill and reassembled at the northern end of the beach, on the site of the present clubhouse. note: the classic “double ender” surfboat in front of the club.
